"runnin With The Boy"

It had to be the most memorable third placing in Max Dumesny’s long and distinguished career. For lap after lap, corner after corner, he ran wheel to wheel with his 21 year old son Mitchell in the 35 lap WSS final at Tyrepower PCR, leaving the crowd enthralled and both parties absolutely thrilled. “I was having so much fun racing with him (Mitchell) that I forgot about trying to catch Kerry (Madsen – the leader), it’s the most fun I’ve had since I can’t remember. It was awesome.” Mitchell too, reciprocated Dad’s comments on the podium. “It was really cool to race with Dad like that,” he grinned, “we raced hard and didn’t give each other an inch. I think we both could have got rid of the other but that wasn’t going to happen. It was just so good to race like that!” Max paid tribute to Mitchell’s race craft. “He’s got heart,” he said, “he doesn’t give up and that is what makes a great racecar driver. I’m really proud of him.” Max brought the #5 Valvoline / GKR Transport Maxim home in third place for the second time in as many nights, only this time it was behind the #77 Eagle One Maxim of his boy. Dumesny Sr would wind up with third place overall in the 2008/2009 WSS Championship after a turbulent season and a main event win at Toowoomba last weekend. Quote of the night to sum up the evening ultimately went to Mitchell. When asked what he thought about getting a bigger cheer than Dad at the pits presentation after the race he said “Well this is my home track! Dad’s is Warrnambool.” What a memorable night, what a memorable battle, what a moment for Australian Speedway…
